As you may already know, there is no requirement that the Speaker of the House of Representatives be a sitting congressperson. This is an idea whose time has come. If not now, when? If Republicans are willing to nominate a presidential candidate with no previous political experience, why not an “outsider” for Speaker?
When the subject comes up, the most logical candidate is Newt Gingrich, based on his history as a former Speaker of the House. But then, Speaker Gingrich is an “insider,” and the Republicans would be hassled for going backward. Ms. Fiorina would give the impression of going forward, and her election to the Speakership would appeal to the tenor of the times.
Can she handle it? Can she do the job? Of course. Probably better than most, and very likely with a refreshing new tone and leadership style that would appeal to all House Republicans. She would not be able to lay off 30% of sitting House members, but you can’t have everything.
Would Speaker Fiorina have allowed the hearings on Planned Parenthood to stray off-track? Would she cut the legs out from under the Benghazi select committee? Would she bring more bills to the floor for actual votes? Pick whatever you don’t like about the Republican House and ask if Speaker Fiorina would be better or worse? She has proven herself in the campaign to be bright, focused, concise, and articulate.
She could unite the caucus. House Republicans should look outside the box, and think outside the box. This would be good for the party and the country. Speaker Boehner should promote her candidacy for Speaker and knock off this McCarthy nonsense.
